DIY Table Runners
AS promised, we have a great DIY project for you inspired by Cara and Spencer’s incredible tablescapes. I love, love, love the organic elegance behind the wedding day design and aside from perfect flowers, it’s the table runners that give the tables texture and style.

My mom’s a pretty amazing seamstress. She learned to sew in her teens, which means she’s been sewing for more than 40 years. In addition to sewing her own prom dresses, she made our Halloween costumes growing up, from princesses to cheerleaders to space women to ladybugs. Planning my wedding, she was a huge resource. And even though she has lots of sewing experience on her belt, she said that anyone with a sewing machine can make these super simple 14-foot long runners! Plus, you can customize your look and use any type of fabric/thread color combination!
Materials
One bolt of 54-inch wide burlap (you can use less, but 21 runners took the full bolt)
Teal Blue Thread
Directions
1. Cut fabric in lengths of 14 feet, two inches.
2. Cut in half lengthwise so that each strip is 27 inches wide
3. Turn the ends and sides under one inch and hem
4. Stitch with a zig zag stitch (my mom used the largest zig zag, about a quarter of an inch) on her machine and chose satin thread)
5. Iron flat

I am in LOVE with this entire wedding... probably because it reminds me a little bit of my own... and plus I'm in the process of moving to Jackson so I am just over the top excited to be reminded of how beautiful everything is out there! Thanks for sharing!

This is a great example of how brides can take on a DIY method and save big bucks, along with creating a gorgeous table runner. Lovely set up on the table as well.

Hi Cara,
Love the weddng pics and love the style! Its similar to what we are shooting for in August for our wedding in the Adirondack Mts in NY.. Im curious as to how wide your tables were? We were only able to locate 30" wide banquet tables.. and Im wondering if they will be wide enough.. Thanks! -

This wedding is beautiful!
You mentioned that the bride's mom made fabric wedding invitations and that some of the groomsmen used them as pocket squares. I was soooooo curious about that and then no pictures materialized (here OR on Martha Stewart). Would love to see photos of these, are they posted anywhere?

hi! thanks for all the lovely comment. to answer your questions:
i honestly can't recall how wide the tables were. from the looks of the picture, they were probably 30" wide. but regardless, just modify the runners to the width that you want. so if you want them 18 inches wide, then just hem the sides more than an inch.

The burlap is from a fabric store in Gastonia, N.C. called Mary Jo's. They have everything you could ever want...and then more!

I did burlap at my wedding in May. I did a wide burlap runner down the center of each round table, layered with a skinny, dark blue runner in a material that looked like dupioni silk. Everyone loved the contrast of the two materials, which gave the tables both a sophisticated and cozy look.
It also tied in with my custom invitations, which featured 1" wide burlap ribbon layered with dark blue satin ribbon, over Paper Source Luxe off-white gatefolds.
I had so much fun with burlap at my wedding, that I'm gifting the left over runners to family members. I broke out my Gocco and customized the plain burlap runners from the wedding, with our family crest and monogram. I'm debating on finishing the edges, or leaving them unhemmed. Hmmm!!!

Cara, I love the table runners! I'm having a wedding this October at my parents farm and the reception is in a barn. My thought is to use a lot of burlap. Have you thought about selling your table runners?

WAS WONDERING IF THESE RUINED OR LEFT TABLECLOTHS DIRTY AFTERWARD.MY MOTHER IN LAW INSISTS THAT I DO NOT USE THESE BECAUSE THEY WILL LEAVE MY SIL TABLECLOTHS WE ARE BORROWING DIRTY AND RUIN THEM. HAVE ANY TIPS OR COMMENTS

I'm making these table runnere for my daughter's wedding using burlap and the fiber is gettin all over everything in sight. I'm concerned it will get in the food. Did you scotch guard it? so you have any suggestions? thanks Harriet

Your wedding was absolutely beautiful. I'm actually getting married in Jackson next summer and am planning on using some sort of burlap linens. I was on SMP looking for DIY ideas when I came across this post. I had something just like this in mind! Is there any chance you still have your linens and want to loan/rent them out? -
